Demonstration Acknowledges Speedy Progress

& asks for Sidewalk Diversions to become a standard tool in the design of worksites

Accomodating walking needs to be standard operating procedure not just on Main Street, but in the entire city.

Thank You!

Thanks go out to Louisville Department of Public Works & Assets and the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet for moving quickly to address this important issue! Thanks also to Phil Miller at the Mayor's office, Terra Long at Councilman Owen's office, and Rob Haynes at Councilman Tandy's office. The thanks are for this!:

Demonstrators hold signs in support of this Sidewalk Diversion

How do you "protest", when the thing you're asking for is given to you before you can organize? Well, you relabel it a "demonstration" and you quickly make some new signs...

"what we want" "this is safer" "this is better" "thank you" "please sir, I want some more" "endangered species ahead" "traffic cones not skull 'n' bones" (click for larger image)

11 demonstrators + our elite photographer Nate P made us a dozen strong - not bad for the middle of a day on a weekday in Louivillainous weather.

Mary Beth B. rails against sidewalk closures besetting Louisville

On Thursday night the diversion was so popular that it would sometimes get congested. There's a reason Main Street normally has 20' sidewalks, folks: that much cement is needed to move massive surges of foot traffic. (aside: at high load, sidewalks move many more people per unit time than putting the people into cars and moving them on a roadway. Sidewalks are the most efficient use of space in our entire transportation system)
