TARC week begins

This week we're going to run an article every day related to TARC, the Transportation Authority of River City. Today's theme is:

The Story So Far

  • TARC is forced into significant route cuts, including the virtual elimination of their express bus service. Read TARC's Frequently Asked Questions on the cuts.
  • Public meetings on the route cuts will run all this week, see ridetarc.org for details.
  • Local transportation activist John Owen is stirring up people to not take the cuts lying down, and plans public meetings. Read his press release.
  • Mayoral Candidate Jackie Green is doing a "media event" at 10:30 am at TARC on Tuesday.
  • Join your fellow TARC riders on the bus@cartky.org mailing list.

Bad TARC Joke of the Day

Q: Is that one of TARC's new light rail cars?

A: No, it is a graph of TARC's funding

Comments

Two paragraphs that bear repeating.

[Since the anonymous post I made before I realized I had an account still didn't get posted, I'll post it here.]

There are two particular paragraphs in the press release that bear repeating:

That 1974 funding of 2/10 of 1 percent never anticipated TARC providing service to Bullitt and Oldham counties over routes once operated by Kentucky Bus Lines, service to Prospect once operated by Prospect Bus Lines, nor to Southern Indiana on routes served by the old Daisy Line, Home Transit Company, Bridge Transit Company

Nor did that 1974 tax address the operation of TARC 3 services which were not mandated in to law until the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act in the 1990’s. TARC 3 accounts for 26 per cent of TARC’s Current budget and is an unfunded mandate added to the occupational tax of 1974 levels.

This is why TARC had to make a bunch of cuts in the mid 1990s.  Paratransit good.  Unfunded mandate bad.  Just... ugh.

Also, if you do decide to attend a meeting...

Remember to be civil.  I can't stress this enough.  The folks at TARC are just as bummed about this as you are.

I'm going to attend one of the meetings, and if I catch you not being nice, I'll give you the Evil Eye.

You do not want to be the recipient of my Evil Eye.

being civil

every one to my knowledge is civil ..... but there is civil and there is firm..... and being firm can also sometimes be read in many ways......  the riders need to be firm in demanding  as few service cuts as possible and a change  at  TARC on partnering with other  transportation providers in the region to lower operating costs on some services.  TARC must be willing to change on some things for the betterment of  our region.
