The cost to own and operate a vehicle has gone up again, according to the AAA. According to Portland Business Journal, the culprits were gasoline, financing, registration, and taxes. Hat tip to PortlandTransport.com.
This doesn't really do it for most drivers, because they're paying registration and insurance regardless of how many miles they drive. Few people are going to decide to sell their car because running up to the post office will cost them $1 including insurance. A more useful metric would be: fixed-cost-per-year with a more realistic cost-per-mile. That would let people decide if a trip was worth it.
However, for the Car-Free, it's a great way to self motivate - here are some tolls for round trips from my house in the highlands:
