Sorry Transportation, Ray LaHood's just not that into you

Interesting profile on Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood in the New York Times today:

But one of the astonishing things about Mr. LaHood, 63, is how limited his transportation résumé is, how little excitement he exudes on the subject (other than about high-speed rail) and how little he seems to care who knows it. So why exactly did President Obama pick this former seven-term Republican congressman from Illinois to oversee everything that moves?

Mr. LaHood posits a theory. “They picked me because of the bipartisan thing,” he explained, “and the Congressional thing, and the friendship thing.”

Give Ray LaHood Some Time

Less than a week ago, Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood named “Livable and Sustainable Communities” as a primary goal for DOT when he testified before a Senate Committee.  You can read more remarks here:  t4america.org/blog/archives/1324 and also dowload the complete testimony.  Let's watch him and let him know we are watching.

Yeah, there was a sense of irony in the original post considering what a great job he's doing. When the electorate picked Obama, there was much scrutinizing of bird entrails to determine if he had his head screwed on on transportation. The early consensus was that he did not. The stimulus came out with its strong emphasis on building roads, and morale was low. And ever since then, things have been coming up roses. HSR. Portland's streetcars. Livable communities. Safety.
