Help Pass KY House Bill 88

Kentucky House Bill 88 would make it easier to prosecute reckless drivers who hit pedestrians and bicyclists. By making it clear that Kentucky will not tolerate reckless driving, HB 88 will make our roads safer for everyone and will encourage walking and bicycling.

How to Help

To pass House Bill 88, we need Rep. John Tilley, who chairs the House Judiciary Committee, to take action on the bill at the Judiciary Committee next meeting. We're utilizing three tactics to achieve this:

Advocate in Frankfort

Journey to Frankfort on Tuesday Feb. 24 to visit with all members of the Judiciary Committee who have not yet cosponsored the bill. We plan to visit legislators from 9 AM until as late as 2 PM when they go into session. Let us know you're coming: ofcmgr@bicyclingforlouisville.org.

Or, come to Frankfort on Wednesday Feb. 25. We will arrive by 11:30 AM to show support for HB 88 at the House Judiciary Committee meeting scheduled for Noon - 1:30 PM (approximately). Again, let us know you're coming: ofcmgr@bicyclingforlouisville.org.

It's important to get participants from across Kentucky.

Please forward this page to anyone who might want to join our citizen team working to pass this bill and improve our safety on the road!

Work the Legislative Comment Line

Call the Legislative Comment Line at 800-372-7181 from 8 AM - 5 PM on weekdays and ask to leave a message for all members of the House Judiciary Committee, as well as House Speaker Greg Stumbo and Speaker Pro Tem Larry Clark. Your message can say "Please hold reckless drivers accountable for hitting pedestrians and bicyclists. Urge Rep. John Tilley to post House Bill 88 to the Judiciary Committee for the committee's February 25 meeting." You can use your own words, but please ask that the Judiciary Committee act on House Bill 88 this coming week.

Connect with your Legislator

If your representative is a member of the House Judiciary Committee, or is Greg Stumbo or Larry Clark, call or write to her or him individually. Give your name and address and mention that you live in their district. Tell your representative that current laws do not adequately protect law-abiding bicyclists and pedestrians and urge him or her to cosponsor House Bill 88 and to urge Judiciary Committee Chairman Tilley to post the bill to the Judiciary Committee. We ask you only to contact one person on this list, and only if you live in her or his district.
