Don't you wish Louisville had more watermelon-shaped bus shelters?
Yeah, I do too.
David Hawpe pines for more interesting bus shelters in his column in today's Courier-Journal. But, really, what he wants is more comfortable bus stops; he especially dislikes the "shelters" in the Bardstown Road corridor which are pretty useless, whether it's raining (no sides), windy (ditto), snowing (ditto) or sunny:
Oh, there's a bench inside the swelter, er, shelter. It's painted black, so as to absorb the maximum amount of heat. It's divided into seats by small, glistening metal arches, which, by mid-afternoon, are about the right temperature for the instant branding of any hands or arms foolishly placed on them.
A minute or two on this bench is sufficient to steam out any wrinkles on the back of trousers.
No wonder friends in cars, having stopped at the red light, pityingly offer me a lift home.
Of course, most bus stops don't have a shelter at all, and sometimes you're standing in a ditch waiting for the bus. The bus shelters mentioned above were a well-intentioned gift paid for by Councilman Tom Owen's office. Apparently they looked better in the catalog.
More comfortable bus stops would make waiting for the bus so much more pleasant...

If we hired a bunch of artists to design bus shelters, we might end up with something akin to our artistic bike racks.

Is it art?: yes!
But is it a bike rack?: no!
