The New York Times has a good overview of American passenger rail

"Amtrak set records in May, both for the number of passengers it carried and for ticket revenues"

Rail Trains

Initial cost would be extreme, however, long term - wouldn't it make more sense to spend it on a railway system country-wide?

My son is in Europe for school this summer and in planning his trip we were in awe to see that he could visit 5 countries via eruorail, in a 120 day time frame, and paid approximately $500 - are we Americans that spoiled that we can't see how this system would benefit our lives.  The demand for this fuel that we're have to have is draining our lives of other things that we need and want.  Why can't we depend more on our own country, spend our money on things that will benefit us - the people, not other countries that have the precious fuel that we're paying an arm and leg for.  Our economy is going downhill fast.  People are loosing jobs, can't find jobs, businesses are being forced to close, grocery costs are rising and people have to decide what to buy milk or gasoline - how sad that our country has become so dependent on this fuel.

A nationwide railway system could be a saving grace - we need more people to be exposed to a system like this and get it going immediately and stop this fuel nightmare for all of us.
